1.5 tonne forklifts (1,500 kg)
Is a 1.5 tonne forklift the right size for your site?
A 1.5 tonne forklift is the smallest truck most Irish businesses can run as a general-purpose machine. It handles a standard Euro or ISO pallet loaded to 1,000–1,200 kg comfortably, turns inside tight back-of-store areas, and puts far less load on suspended floors and mezzanines than a 2.5 or 3 tonne truck. If your heaviest routine pallet is under about 1,250 kg and you are not double-stacking, this is usually the right, and cheapest, place to start.
- Retail and wholesale back-of-store
- Light manufacturing and assembly
- Print, packaging and electronics
- Mezzanine and first-floor storage
- Van and tail-lift loading bays
- Sites with narrow aisles under 3.5 m
Specifying
Four checks before you sign off the capacity
These four decisions settle almost every forklift specification we quote in Ireland.
Rate the truck at your load centre
Every capacity figure is quoted at a 500 mm load centre. Long, deep or off-centre loads derate the truck fast — send us the pallet dimensions, not just the weight.
Check lift height derating
Residual capacity falls as the mast extends, especially on reach trucks and triplex masts. We size against your top beam level, not the floor.
Electric unless you truly need combustion
Modern lithium electrics match diesel throughput indoors and in most Irish yards, with no fumes, far lower running cost and no fuel storage.
Add a safety margin — but not too much
Aim for roughly 10–20% headroom over your heaviest routine load. Over-specifying adds weight, cost, turning circle and floor loading you don't need.
