Is a 3 tonne forklift the right size for your site?
A 3 tonne forklift is a yard and heavy-industry machine. It carries blockwork, steel, timber packs, big bags, machinery and long loads that would overwhelm a warehouse truck, and it does it on surfaces a smaller truck would struggle with. The trade-offs are size, weight and floor loading — so most Irish operators run a 3 tonne outside and a smaller electric inside rather than trying to make one truck do both.

Four checks before you sign off the capacity
These four decisions settle almost every forklift specification we quote in Ireland.
Rate the truck at your load centre
Every capacity figure is quoted at a 500 mm load centre. Long, deep or off-centre loads derate the truck fast — send us the pallet dimensions, not just the weight.
Check lift height derating
Residual capacity falls as the mast extends, especially on reach trucks and triplex masts. We size against your top beam level, not the floor.
Electric unless you truly need combustion
Modern lithium electrics match diesel throughput indoors and in most Irish yards, with no fumes, far lower running cost and no fuel storage.
Add a safety margin — but not too much
Aim for roughly 10–20% headroom over your heaviest routine load. Over-specifying adds weight, cost, turning circle and floor loading you don't need.

FAQs
3 tonne forklift questions
It can be, but check three things first: floor loading (a 3 tonne electric can weigh over 4.5 tonnes unladen plus load), aisle width, and door heights against the collapsed mast. Many sites are better served by a 3 tonne yard truck plus a smaller indoor electric.
