Is a 2.5 tonne forklift the right size for your site?
A 2.5 tonne forklift is the step up for sites where pallets are genuinely heavy or occasionally doubled. Drinks, tiles, chemicals, paper reels, animal feed and packaged aggregates all routinely exceed what a 2 tonne truck can lift once you allow for load centre and lift height derating. The extra capacity costs a little more in purchase price, tyre wear and turning circle — and buys you headroom you will actually use.

Four checks before you sign off the capacity
These four decisions settle almost every forklift specification we quote in Ireland.
Rate the truck at your load centre
Every capacity figure is quoted at a 500 mm load centre. Long, deep or off-centre loads derate the truck fast — send us the pallet dimensions, not just the weight.
Check lift height derating
Residual capacity falls as the mast extends, especially on reach trucks and triplex masts. We size against your top beam level, not the floor.
Electric unless you truly need combustion
Modern lithium electrics match diesel throughput indoors and in most Irish yards, with no fumes, far lower running cost and no fuel storage.
Add a safety margin — but not too much
Aim for roughly 10–20% headroom over your heaviest routine load. Over-specifying adds weight, cost, turning circle and floor loading you don't need.

FAQs
2.5 tonne forklift questions
When your heaviest routine pallet is above roughly 1,700 kg, when you double-stack in trailers, or when you use attachments such as clamps and rotators that eat into residual capacity. If those apply even occasionally, the extra half tonne is cheaper than a truck that cannot do the job.
