Counterbalance certification

The category most Irish operators need first

The counterbalance forklift — sit-on, front-loading, no outriggers — is the most common truck on Irish sites and the category most operators certify on first. Irish workplace law requires operators to be trained and competent on the specific truck type they use, which means a counterbalance ticket does not cover a reach truck or an order picker, and vice versa. AWE runs counterbalance courses nationwide for complete novices, for experienced operators converting from another category or from unaccredited in-house training, and for the three-yearly refresher that keeps existing certification current. Training is delivered on your own truck wherever practical, so the operator you get back at the end of the week is competent on the machine they actually drive.

FAQ

Counterbalance training — common questions

Counterbalance is the standard sit-on, front-loading forklift category. Irish and UK accrediting bodies label it differently — B1 and B2 under the RTITB category system, A1 under some ITSSAR-style schemes — but they all describe the same competence: operating a counterbalance truck safely, including pre-use checks, load handling and stacking. Whichever label appears on the certificate, Irish employers, insurers and the HSA are looking for evidence of category-specific training and assessment.
