Forklift Servicing in Ireland: Intervals, What's Included and What Drives the Cost
Service intervals are set by hours and duty cycle, not by the calendar alone. Here is how Irish fleets should plan servicing, and what actually moves the price.

Most forklifts in Irish single-shift use are serviced every 500 operating hours or roughly every six months, whichever comes first. Multi-shift, cold store, foundry and heavily laden applications move to shorter intervals. A preventative maintenance visit covers inspection, adjustment, lubrication, filter and fluid changes to the manufacturer schedule, and a written defect report. Cost is driven by truck type and power source, hours run, site location, response commitment and whether parts and wear items are inside or outside the contract.

Always follow the manufacturer's schedule for the specific model; these are planning norms, not a substitute for it.
Servicing is not Thorough Examination
A preventative maintenance visit keeps the truck reliable. A Thorough Examination is a separate statutory inspection of the lifting equipment. Sites commonly schedule both on the same visit, but one never replaces the other.
What a preventative maintenance visit should include
- ›Mast, chains, rollers and fork inspection, with wear measured rather than eyeballed.
- ›Hydraulics: hoses, rams, seals and fluid condition, plus drift testing under load.
- ›Brakes, steering, tyres and seat restraint.
- ›Power source: battery condition, electrolyte and connections on lead-acid, cell balance on lithium, or oil, filters and emissions on engine trucks.
- ›Safety devices: horn, lights, beacons, mirrors, cameras and interlocks.
- ›Written defect report with photographs, and a quote for anything found outside the service scope.
What moves the price
There is no meaningful national rate card for forklift servicing, because two identical trucks in different buildings generate very different work. These are the variables that change a quote.
- Truck type and power source — an engine truck has consumables an electric truck does not.
- Hours run per year, which sets how many visits are needed.
- Site location and travel time from the nearest engineer.
- Response commitment: priority breakdown attendance costs more than best-endeavours.
- Scope: labour-only, labour plus parts, or full cover including wear items and tyres.
- Fleet size — several trucks on one site is far cheaper per truck than a single machine.

The honest test is downtime cost. If an hour with the truck out of action costs more than the monthly difference between the two options, contract cover pays for itself the first time something breaks.
